Bonus Lesson 1 – Using the Gassho Meditation to Strengthen Your Reiki Practice

What is Gassho Meditation?

Gassho Meditation is a fundamental practice in Reiki that helps initiates center their energy, focus their minds, and connect with the Universal Life Force.

“Gassho” means “hands in prayer position,” and during this meditation, the palms are brought together in front of the heart.

This simple yet powerful technique allows Reiki practitioners to align their energy with their intentions and cultivate mindfulness.

Steps to Do Gassho Meditation

  1. Find a quiet space. Sit comfortably, either cross-legged on the floor or in a chair with your feet flat on the ground. Keep your spine straight but relaxed.
  2. Bring your palms together in front of your heart center, fingers pointing upward. This is the traditional Gassho position, which symbolizes gratitude and unity.
  3. Close your eyes and take slow, deep breaths. Focus on the sensation of your palms touching and the natural rise and fall of your breath. Allow any thoughts or distractions to fade as you bring your attention inward.
  4. Set an intention or focus on one of the Reiki principles—for example, “Just for today, I will not worry” or “Just for today, I will be kind to all living beings.” Visualize this principle as energy radiating from your heart center.
  5. As you continue to breathe, maintain your focus on your palms and your chosen intention. Allow yourself to be fully present with the energy, opening yourself to peace and alignment.
  6. After a few minutes, gently release your hands from the Gassho position. Take a moment to express gratitude for the practice, the energy, and the connection you’ve established.
