The world of crystals is fascinating and fun. With all the varieties, types, and colors, it can also be overwhelming.
How do you choose the right crystals for you?
- Trust your intuition! This is the most important element of picking a crystal.
Everything is energy – you are energy, crystals are energy, air, music, birds, the cosmos…everything! We all vibrate at a different energetic level, some subtle, some more noticeable. You’ll naturally be drawn to crystals that resonate with your vibration or that you need in order to raise your vibration in order to heal and expand your life.
When you select a crystal, trust what you are drawn to. This may include:
Color
Size
Shape
Feel – this can be the actual weight: is it heavy, making you feel more grounded, or is the crystal light, giving you a sense of freedom and expansion? It can also mean the sensations you feel when holding it (tingling, buzzing, heat, cold, etc.).
Use your other senses along with your intuition. Do you hear a tone, a whisper, a word when you hold the crystal? Do you smell a familiar scent? Close your eyes. Do you see any colors, symbols or numbers? Do a body scan. Do you feel any sensations in other parts of your body? Pressure in your head? Tightness in your throat? Heat in your aching hip? Crystals help you tap into your intuitive self, including your psychic abilities, so tune in!
- Let the crystal pick you.
If you’re unsure of what you like or need, line several crysals up in a row. Hold your nondominant hand an inch or so above each crystal and see if you feel heat or any sensation that draws you to the crystal.
- Use the chakra system for guidance. Chakras are the energy centers in the body. They are often out of balance and crystals, oils, foods, and a host of other tools can bring them back into balance, allowing the body to heal naturally.

- Choose a crystal meant for a specific intention – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.
Do you want to connect with angels?
Do you need to feel more secure in your home?
Do you suffer from arthritis?
Struggle with your hormones?
There’s a crystal for that (no matter what issue or intention you have)!
You may also want to look for a particular type of crystal in a specific form to increase its effectiveness.
A sphere sends out energy in all directions, representing unity, completeness, and infinity, and is useful for clarity, whole-body healing, and looking into the future.
A pyramid or tower gathers energy from its base, amplifies it, and then focuses the energy to send out at its point, making it useful for drawing off negative energy or focusing energy to draw in what you want to manifest.
Depending on your intention, you can combine the healing power of a crystal with a specific structure to amplify its effectiveness.
**Note: it’s a law of nature that your beliefs must be a vibrational match to your desires in order for you to “successfully” manifest. Many people manifest materialistic wants and desires but at the expense of their health and relationships. Stress, high blood pressure, heart attacks… be sure you’re setting intentions from your higher self in order to see authentic, lasting, and healthy success.
Raw vs. Tumbled/Polished
Raw (rough) stones often have a stronger energetic vibration and are can be larger and showier, but may also expose the user to toxic materials. Always wash hands after using.
If used for healing, they may be too intense for some people but may be perfect for someone who feels stuck or needs a powerful push in a specific direction.
Often a minute or two with a raw stone can get energy flowing, then tumbled stones can be placed over the chakras to balance.
I find raw stones are very effective for dispersing energy and raising the vibrations in a large area, such as a room, office, or entire home. They’re perfect to use in combination with floral arrangements, plants, ambient lighting, candles, and anything else that brings visual peace and harmony.
Keep them away from children and pets.
Tumbled (polished) stones are often smaller, have softer energy, a smooth, rounded surface, and are easy to carry. They are typically the best choice for chakra layouts, grids, pocket talismans, and jewelry. Again, because they may be choking hazards, keep them away from children and pets.
